What is cardio-oncology?

Cardio-oncology is a medical specialty dedicated to the cardiovascular care of patients with cancer. Its focus is on ensuring patients are as fit as possible prior to cancer treatments, and looking after those who are at risk of or who have developed heart problems as a result of their cancer treatment.

Patients with cancer may need to see a cardio-oncology specialist before, during or after their cancer therapy.

Meet Dr Rebecca Dobson

Dr Rebecca Dobson is a Consultant Cardiologist, specialising in Cardio-Oncology, the cardiovascular care of cancer patients.

Dr Dobson graduated from the University of Leicester in 2005. She completed her postgraduate and specialist cardiology training in the Mersey Deanery and obtained MRCP(UK) in 2008. She obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Liverpool in 2017 on the subject of carcinoid heart disease. She took up her consultant post at Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital in 2019 and runs the ICOS gold accredited Cheshire and Merseyside Cardio-Oncology Service.

Dr Dobson is passionate about improving the cardiovascular health of cancer patients. She sees patients at the point of their cancer diagnosis to risk stratify and optimise their heart health. She also screens and monitors patients to detect cardiotoxicity at the earliest possible stage in order to instigate appropriate treatment to reduce any unnecessary interruptions to cancer therapy. Finally, she also sees patients who have been cured of their cancer but are concerned about the cardiovascular long term effects of cancer therapy.
